HOURLY RATE $19.04 - $22.21
Operatesfarm-type tractors and towed or attached equipment on steep or rough terrain and performs seasonal gardening and grounds maintenance work.
Operates such equipment as earth augers, front-end loaders and rear blades, snow removal equipment, seeders, fertilizer and plow spreaders, various mowers, sweepers, front-end forks and grapples.
Makes adjustments for various job requirements; such as setting mower blade height, depth of plow blades, and rate of application for seeders and sprayer attachments.
Plans and carries out gardening work according to the schedule or project assignment, keeping within the framework of established gardening practices.
Performs clean-up duties, such as cleaning equipment, sweeping, straightening, and lining up tools and other property in the assigned area.

Experience: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C; for additional information click here. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must meet any screen-out element(s) listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. An example of experience includesoperating tractors, mobile equipment, attached equipment and other powered equipment used to perform grounds maintenance work.
The screen out element for this position is the Ability to do the work of a Tractor Operator without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS REQUIRED:
1. Ability to do the work of a Tractor Operator without more than normal supervision (Screen Out).
2. Knowledge of equipment to make multiple connections from equipment to the tractor: and of operating characteristics and skill to operate tractors and manipulate equipment controls simultaneously to compensate for steep and rough uneven terrain features.
3. Knowledge of safety practices, regulations and procedures.
4. Knowledge of seasonal gardening tasks, such as fertilizing, preparing seedbeds, transplanting, laying sod, aerating, pruning, trimming, and applying chemicals to plants.
5. Knowledge of grounds maintenance, such as mowing grass and trimming trees and shrubs, and how to apply chemicals and fertilizers.
6._ _Skill in using and maintaining hand and power tools, such as seeders, spreaders, edger's, hedge trimmers, pruning shears, sprayer, spades, hoes, rakes, and mowers; in judging clearances, heights, and turning angles of tractor and towed vehicles/equipment; and to adjust equipment for various job requirements.
7. Ability to recognize obvious plant diseases, plant insects, and unusual or poor plant growth: to follow instructions, work orders, specifications, etc. and to document actions taken: and to perform operator maintenance on tractors and associated equipment.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Physical effort is light to moderate. Exerts additional effort in operating the tractor and manipulating equipment controls to compensate for difficult terrain. Performs more exacting work such as digging with a backhoe to close tolerances, requiring considerable manipulation of controls. Work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts and wheelbarrows, bending, and stooping, as well as reaching,turning or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Occasionally climbs ladders to prune or trim vegetation. Frequently lifts and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally moves heavier objects with assistance.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works primarily outside or in a greenhouse and is exposed to all kinds of weather conditions, vibrations and jolts from the tractor and towed equipment. Employees are exposed to chemical dust, sprays, dust, dirt, mud, grease, and/or fumes daily. Work typically requires wearing protective clothing such as gloves, safety shoes, and boots. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment to avoid injury and possible hazards in the work area. Works on steep slopes and in rough terrain, and may be subject to injury from falls or overturned tractors and equipment.
